Lincoln City is “fairly confident” that Brennan Johnson will not be recalled to Nottingham Forest next month.

The loan star’s one-season deal will be reviewed in January and it is possible he will be recalled by Reds manager Chris Hughton.

Johnson produced another scintillating display for the Imps on Saturday, scoring twice in the 5-1 win over Burton Albion, as they were three points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Many Forest fans want Johnson recalled to help boost Hughton’s attacking options, but Lincoln manager Michael Appleton is hopeful the 19-year-old sees the season at LNER stadium.

“There is a termination clause in all loan contracts in January. We are quite confident that everything will be fine. We’ve had a constant dialogue with Forest, ”Appleton said after the win over Burton.

“We’re not going to take this as a gospel – I would be naive to do so – but we’re pretty confident.”

If Forest is to recall Johnson, they must do so by a certain date. There won’t be a repeat of last January when the Reds recalled Tyler Walker just outside the window, leaving City desperately short of options ahead.

“We tried to get it [the deadline] ASAP, so by the second week of january we’ll know what’s going on with all the loans, ”added Appleton, who has three other players on loan for the season.
