TEHRAN – Iran-made drugs worth $7.5 million have been exported to Russia in recent years [Iranian calendar] year (March 2021-March 2022), a Food and Drug Administration official said.

Biological medicine accounts for a large share of products exported from Iran to Russia, ISNA quoted Hossein Shomali as saying on Friday.

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the active and important industries which over the past few years has been able to meet the national drug needs at an acceptable level with significant growth.

At the same time, one of the solutions for the development of the pharmaceutical industry, considering the large volume of the pharmaceutical consumption market in the world, is export, he underlined.

The export of medicines has advantages such as the saving of foreign currency and thus facilitates the production cycle with the possibility of importing raw materials, it can also lead to the reduction of production costs and, on the other hand , it can encourage the manufacturing enterprise to improve product quality. , he explained.

He went on to say that the value of the country’s export of pharmaceutical items last year was about 60 million dollars, which increased by 30% from the previous year, which shows the share of 0.2% of the pharmaceutical industry in export revenue between different industries. from the country.

Countries that lack pharmaceutical production infrastructure or have a small share of domestic production relative to their pharmaceutical market can be a good export target for Iranian companies, he added.

The value of Iranian pharmaceutical exports to Russia last year was about $7.5 million, or 12.5% of the country’s total exports, most of which were biomedical products, he said.

The import of pharmaceuticals has fallen by 91% in Iran, which shows the capacity of the country’s pharmaceutical industry, Mohammad Reza Shanehsaz, former head of the Food and Drug Administration, said last year.

Today, all drugs used in the treatment of coronavirus are produced by domestic manufacturers, and if we wanted to import all the items, there would be a high exchange rate, he added, pointing out that the development of the COVID-19 vaccine indicates the capacity of the pharmaceutical industry. .

According to the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, a total of 227 knowledge-based enterprises supply medical equipment to health centers across the country.

Pharmaceuticals made in Iran are currently exported to Canada, Japan and Europe, said Faramarz Ekhteraei, president of the Union of Iranian Pharmaceutical Industries, pointing out that 72 percent of the country’s pharmaceutical raw materials are produced in the country.

Some 40% of the country’s total pharmaceutical exports are biotech products, said a board member of the Association of Manufacturers and Exporters of Medical Biotech Products.

Iranian biotech products are exported to European, Asian and Latin American countries, and Iranian technology can compete with other countries in this field, he added.
