An incredible video of a hungry lioness stalking a newborn giraffe while the protective mother struggled hard to save her calf has gone viral on social media.
Heartbreaking video of 10 hour old baby giraffe struggling to survive in front of terrified mother has been shared by the wildlife app Latest observations.
After an intense battle with the lioness, the newborn miraculously survived but then fell into a river and drowned from exhaustion. The video was captured in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in the Masai Mara in Kenya while Don Heyneke, a wildlife photographer, was on safari, south african reported.
The video begins by showing the giraffe calf still learning to walk, being stalked by a hungry lioness and a hyena. The hyena soon loses interest in the prey, but the lioness relentlessly follows the herd for about four miles.
Throughout the journey, the protective mother tries to keep her calf just under her legs to protect the baby from the lioness attacks.
When they reach a dead end, the lioness approaches them and the terrified mother accidentally knocks the newborn off a cliff. The calf then finds itself stuck in the bed of a river. The lioness grabs the calf and drags it towards the water.

During this time, the mother giraffe pursues the lioness several times but her cub seems almost dead from the attack. “To everyone’s surprise, he got up but not for very long as the calf ended up finding refuge in the river where it fell asleep from exhaustion. The baby giraffe, with a fight for its survival like no one else. ‘never seen one before, drowned,’ Heyneke says.
